"The Great Indian Bustard: A Species on the Brink of Local Extinction?
The Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary in Andhra Pradesh's Nandyal district has been eerily quiet for the past two years, with no sightings of the majestic Great Indian Bustard (GIB). This alarming absence has raised concerns among wildlife authorities, hinting at a looming local extinction.
Usually, these migratory birds would make a pit stop at the sanctuary for a few days, but their prolonged disappearance has sparked worry. District Forest Officer Alan Chong Teron confirmed, "We've been conducting regular surveys, but there's been no sign of the GIB in the last couple of years. Even independent conservation organizations have drawn a blank."
However, there's a glimmer of hope! Scientists at the conservation breeding center in Rajasthan's Pokhran achieved a groundbreaking milestone in 2023 - captive-reared GIBs bred naturally for the first time! This success story offers a beacon of hope for the species' revival.
Let's keep a close eye on the fate of this magnificent bird and continue conservation efforts to ensure its survival."
